Artist&Pianist
There is something uniquely intimate about shorter musical forms such as songs, impromptus, and fantasy pieces. From the late Romantic era to the present day, songs have captivated audiences through the delicate union of text and melody. Even when words fall away, their essence remains powerful—a distilled emotional world that speaks directly to the listener.
This ability to communicate without text is precisely what makes song arrangements for piano so compelling. The piano becomes a voice, capable of breathing, shaping, and remembering.
Many composers and pianists have felt compelled to preserve these fleeting musical moments through piano arrangements of songs. The Silent Voices albums were born out of my deep affection for this repertoire and my desire to honour the vocal line—the human breath behind the music—at the piano.
While legendary arrangements such as Liszt’s Widmung or Balakirev’s The Lark are well known, other treasures remain less familiar. Max Reger, for instance, created extraordinary piano transcriptions of songs by Brahms and Richard Strauss.
Pieces such as Allerseelen and Morgen, among Strauss’s most sublime songs, are true gems of the arrangement repertoire—works I myself only discovered relatively recently.
For this album, I selected the following works, each representing a different approach to transforming song into piano music:
Performing piano song arrangements presents a unique challenge. My primary goal is always to preserve the vocal line—to let the piano truly sing. At the same time, each arrangement demands a different interpretative approach.
In Liszt’s transcription of Isolde’s Liebestod, the piano becomes almost orchestral, allowing for a grand and expansive sound world. By contrast, Henri Herz’s The Last Rose of Summer transforms the song into a set of brilliant variations. The piece was so beloved by audiences that they reportedly demanded it at nearly every concert during Herz’s tours in the United States.
Each arrangement on Silent Voices reflects not only the original song, but also the personality, imagination, and aesthetic ideals of its arranger.
